| Our mission has always been to help parents to use cloth nappies wherever they got them from, so whether you buy from Nappy Days, buy second hand, or get given some nappies, we are committed to helping you use them. If you have a nappy you don’t know how to use email (and send a picture if you don’t know what its called), and we’ll give you instructions and explain anything else you may need to get started.
Washable nappies can seem very daunting – there is so much choice, a whole new language to learn and so many different bits. Don’t be put off.
Remember there are just 3 bits:
The cover or wrap – the waterproof outer layer, change this every 12 hours approx
The nappy –the absorbent bit
The liner – either a flushable bit, or can be washable
Some nappies have more than one bit built in – nappies can have washable liners in them, or include a waterproof covers, or both (see All in ones!)
Ideally, 3 or 4 wraps and around 15 to 20 nappies are sufficient to mean washing every 2-3 days. But it’s fine to start with a sample pack of one wrap, a few different nappies and a roll of liners. If you would like any help getting started and maybe some guidance for putting together a sample pack then please contact us.
You will also need something airtight to store your used nappies in – a bucket with a lid is most convenient (the lid stops any smells!), and a washable bag for when you are out and about.
Your drying facilities will also affect the time a wash cycle takes and therefore the number of nappies required. If drying is an issue consider Flexitot or Teddy nappies as they dry very quickly without tumble drying, and stay very soft.
Most parents pick and mix rather than using just one nappy choice, using a different nappy for out and about, home days, nights and showing off at weighing clinic! Before buying a full set of nappies it is a good idea to try a few different types to see what suits you and your baby.
With newborns, quantity is more important than absorbency – many newborns can get through over a dozen nappies a day, then after a couple months this usually reduces to maybe half a dozen and less as the baby gets older. We recommend getting some versatile terry squares and muslins to increase your number of nappies for less outlay. These are very handy to have anyway with a new baby, and many parents surprise themselves with how well they get on with terry squares.
To start with you will be changing your newborn baby at least once over night. When your baby starts to go through the night without needing a change you may find you need a more absorbent nappy, sometimes just adding a booster is enough. Contact us if you would like help choosing a night nappy.
All in one style nappies are very convenient for use when out and about as they go on in one like a disposable. They are also great for times when someone else may be looking after your baby who is not used to your nappies or for childcare and nursery. It’s useful to have a few in your collection.
Think about who is likely to be changing your baby too. Some one who has poor mobility in their fingers would fine changes easier if you avoid popper fastening nappies and wraps.
Remember - there are no right answers. No nappy is perfect for everyone as every baby is a different shape and size, has a different diet, wees/poos differently and everyone has different washing/drying facilities and family requirements. Do ask around to find out what friends and other washable nappy users recommend, but be prepared to experiment for yourself to find what’s best for you.
NOTE: Many nappies are fastened with Aplix, this is a hook and loop system, similar to Velcro.
